Henrick

Henrick had suspected for quite some time that Lyra was his mate.

He hadn’t wanted to bring it up to her, because she’d had enough to deal with, without having to sort through any romantic feelings.

But he wasn’t going to be able to push his feelings aside any longer.

He’d watched Lyra deal with the traumatized young Fae female they’d found in the woods. As he’d observed her put the girl at ease, he couldn’t help but admire her skill. Lyra was still so uncertain of her own worth, and yet she was able to soothe a terrified young female within minutes of meeting her.

That evening, once they’d settled into their tents for the night, Henrick pulled Lyra aside. They’d been so busy getting Josefine set up in a tent next to Annika that they’d barely had any time alone at all.

And Henrick didn’t want this conversation to wait. He wanted her to know the truth about how he felt, as soon as possible.

“Lyra, there is something I need to tell you,” Henrick said.

“That sounds ominous,” she said.

“It should not be. I hope that it will be welcome.”

“Okay. What is it?”

“You’re familiar with the term mate?”

“Somewhat. I’ve heard you mention it about your friends who are shifters.”

“Yes, I have mentioned it. All of the Irish shifters that I have met, as well as the ones who live in Texas, are mated. For dragon shifters and other shifters, mates mean they are significant others. But it is much more extensive than that. A mate is closer to the idea of a soulmate than it is to a spouse or partner.”

“What do you mean by extensive?” she asked.

“It’s permanent. And it’s life-long.”

“So it’s an unbreakable bond?”

“It’s not unbreakable per se,” Henrick said. “But no shifter would ever want to break it.”

Lyra pursed her full lips. “What if the other person leaves? What if they died?”

“I do not know of any shifter who has left. Rhett has told me about a few who became abusive to their partner but never to their mate. Death is a different story. Many times the shifter never takes a mate again. Their mate is for life.”

“Were your parents mated?”

“Yes. They still are. Nearly everyone in my clan is. They’re all happy,” he said. “From the look on your face, I assume there were no mated pairs in your coven?"

“No. Most of them did not even pair up. Most of them did not sleep together. There was just too much competition and too much animosity. Someone was always jockeying for the top spot under Viviana and Xander. When they hooked up, they went for humans and then killed them.”

Henrick gritted his teeth. So far the conversation was not doing as well as he had hoped. Lyra had a faraway look in her eyes.

But Henrick was not going to give up hope. He was going to tell her the truth. In the time he had spent with Rhett, he had heard many stories of shifters who ignored the bond they had formed with their mate.
